APPLICANT REVIEW COMMITTEE

The City of Cottonwood is forming an Applicant Review Committee that will be tasked with reviewing applications for all City Boards and Commissions, and making recommendations to the City Council about Board and Commission applicants. This is a non-paid and volunteer position.

If you would be interested in being the citizen representative on this new committee, please send a Letter of Interest to Iris Dobler, Human Resources Manager, 816 N. Main St., Cottonwood, AZ 86326, fax your letter to 634-3727, or email it to idobler@cottonwoodaz.gov. Applicants must reside within the corporate limits of the City of Cottonwood.

PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL RETIREMENT BOARD

This Board is seeking applicants to fill a voting member term that will expire December 31, 2020. This position is voluntary and non-paid.

The purpose of the City of Cottonwood Public Safety Board is to administer the Police and Fire Departments’ retirement system benefits, approve new members, handle actions on claims for retirements and disability claims, and analyze annual reports with respect to the administration of the system.

BOARD OF ADJUSTMENTS

The City of Cottonwood is seeking applicants for the Board of Adjustment. Two seats are for a two-year term, and two seats are for a three-year term. These are volunteer, non-paid opportunities.

This Board is a quasi-judicial decision-making body that hears variance requests and appeals of decisions of the Zoning Administrator. Training is available. The Board meets on an as-needed basis throughout the year.

PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION

The City of Cottonwood is seeking candidates to fill three seats on the seven-member Parks & Recreation Commission. Each appointment is for a three year term. These are volunteer appointments; commissioners serve without pay, and are appointed by the City Council.

The Commission acts in an advisory/support capacity to the City Council and the Community Services General Manager. The Commission also assists in the establishment of general priorities and budget items relating to parks development, recreation programs, park land acquisition and capital improvements.

If you are a Cottonwood resident living within city limits, and are interested in serving your community as a member of the Commission, please consider volunteering.

LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD

The Cottonwood Public Library is seeking applicants to fill one partial term on its Advisory Board. This board member will finish a term ending January 21, 2018 and must reside within the corporate limits of the City. This Board consists of seven members, at least five of who shall reside within the corporate limits of the City.

The Library Board is advisory in nature except in the area of adopting policies concerning patron/staff interaction, including a system of fines, developed by the library manager and presented to the board for a majority-vote approval.

In order to accomplish the above tasks successfully, it is necessary for board members to stay current with library events. The manager reports happenings of the previous month to the board on the third Wednesday of the month at 4:30 PM from September through May. Most board members are or have been active library volunteers. This is a volunteer position; board members serve without pay.

PERSONNEL BOARD

The five member board is made up of two citizens at large, who are appointed by the City Council, and three City employees, elected by the employees of the City, who will all serve a two-year term.

The purpose of the City of Cottonwood Personnel board is to hear appeals of employees’ grievances, disciplinary actions, and dismissals in accordance with City policy and the policies set forth in the Employee Manual. The Personnel Board is also active in employee recognition programs.

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION

The Cottonwood City Council is seeking candidates to fill four seats on the Planning and Zoning Commission. This is to fill a 3-year term.

Commission members are responsible for the review of land use proposals (conditional use permits, zoning, subdivisions, code amendments and other special planning projects), as well as issues pertaining to architectural style, building design/materials, colors, landscaping, signs, etc. Preference will be given to applicants with a design-related background, training or experience, including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, planning, fine arts, etc.

Candidates must be residents of the City of Cottonwood, and willing to meet as needed as part of a public hearing process (typically 2-4 times each month). On-going attendance is essential.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

The City of Cottonwood is seeking volunteers to fill four seats on its Historic Preservation Commission. These seats are for 3-year terms. Candidates must be residents of the City of Cottonwood. It is desirable that applicants have professional experience in the fields of architecture, planning, history, archeology, or construction.

The commission consists of seven members, five of whom shall be residents of the city, and two of whom need not be residents of the city, provided that the City Council finds at the time of their appointment that they have substantial ties within the corporate limits of the city, such as owning real property, owning a business, being employed within the city limits, or based on any other factors deemed relevant by the City Council.
